Saturday, Stormy, Brian, and I went to the Pumpkin Holler course to do a little mapping and measuring. This course circumvents the Nickel Nature Preserve and is a 28 mile loop that we will use in our Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd. We will add a short out-and-back to make the distances work out--got it all figured out.But this post is really more of a teaser directed towards the TOTs. We plan to have a trail trip here in the near future.Just inside this gate is the Nickel Preserve headquarters, and a couple of trail heads. While there are not miles and miles of trails, there are some. Stormy and I ran a couple of loops and decided the TOTs would love 'em.Stringing these two trails (the Pine Ridge and the Havannah) together, you get about three miles of wide soft trails with not one, but two nice steep hills.Stormy reaches the top, while I was taking pictures. Neither of us were setting any land-speed records, as we both had ran a road 15K earlier in the day. But we MAY have set a record--a sign said to allow 2 hours to complete this 3 mile circuit, but we think we may have set a record for the fastest completion. We made the round trip in right at 33 minutes. This area would be great for our walking group (not sure if there are any geocaches--my phone had no signal) and if the three miles were not enough, you can run up a gravel road that bisects the preserve and pick up another mile loop around a wetland area. This road is incredibly beautiful, andf there are a few other roads that are gated off that I would love to explore. This area has tall grass, wide trails, single track trails, tall pines, and possibly a water crossing or two if it ever rains.Another option might be for a group to start at the beginning of the Pumpkin Holler course and run around 12 miles to the Nickel Preserve.I can't wait to show off this area. It'll be a fun TOTs trail trip. We'll post the dates for it soon.
